The Start of 2019
So another year has rolled around (at least it did a few days ago) and I, like many of us, have been reflecting on what happened in 2018, and what my plans for 2019 might be. For me, personally, 2018 didn't go to plan - and I seemed to spend most of the year bouncing between injury and illness, and not completing many of the events I'd wanted to. So as the New Year comes around, and now having had some great medical advice as to what the root cause of my problems were, I'm super excited about what I might be able to do this year. I just need to negotiate with my better-half on how many things, and where, I can enter.
The other thing that I was reflecting on is that there is so much great info out there on triathlon, training plans, kit to buy etc. and I have a great time reading it all, and creating wish-lists, and then when it comes down to it I have to make the real decisions on where to spend my money. I'd love a power-meter on my bike - but at the moment that would mean I wouldn't enter any races (so probably not worth it). I look (and listen) in envy at the rhythmic hum as someone with a disc wheel passes me in a race - but there's no way I can justify that spend myself. Don't get me wrong - there are areas I choose to spend that others don't; I have a coach supporting my training (who is fantastic) - but that means that I won't invest in Zwift and just listen to the radio when churning out the watts on my turbo.
And so, I am inspired to try and capture my thoughts and insights in 2019 as I go through another year of triathlon as, what I see, a genuinely average athlete. My swimming leaves a lot to be desired, my bike is OK, and whilst not the quickest runner in the world there are probably a lot of people who would like to run the speeds that I can. If anyone reads this perhaps they'll find my musings useful, interesting or at least a way to pass a couple of minutes.
However, like all of us there is no better inspiration than some shiny kit - and so I nipped off to our local Asics outlet store for some new shoes (less than the rrp price of one pair for the 2 pairs - and the fact that my old ones are starting to fall apart meant I felt I had a good excuse). And so some nice clean new shoes - just don't tell my coach I've bought some trail shoes - as I don't have any excuse not to get off-road now.
