First Zwift Team Time Trial
With Tuesday nights now becoming Zwift Racing League night, I'm getting to experience a new type of fun - and also to have that challenge that just training through Covid hasn't really provided. At least now when someone asks "What are you training for?" I can at least say to get better at Zwift racing, rather than nothing in particular!
Race 2 of Season 2 ZRL was a Team Time Trial around the France map, on the RGV course (or route grand vitesse - literally high speed road). As you might guess, or likely already know, this is a pretty flat course and a fairly speedy one. (Have a look here if you are interested in more details of the course: "R.G.V." Route Details (France) - Zwift Insider). My biggest concerns ahead of this race were two-fold:
- Had I read the delay from the start right so we'd go as a team at the right point and not get DQ'd or add loads of time to our race?
- Would I be able to stay with the team for more than the first two minutes I managed with the bunch on last weeks scratch race?
Good news on both of these - I got the time right, and actually hung on to the team for a good two-thirds of the race; up to the point where it was natural I'd get dropped as the weakest rider. Rather than writing all about the race, I decided to try my hand at recoding it and adding my thoughts to the video.
If you are thinking about taking part in ZRL I hope you find this useful - at least you get to see what it is like to take part and not be at the front of the race, trying to win. To be completely honest I'm not finding that the position makes a lot of difference - its great fun and you push yourself hard because its a race. You are also part of a team - and that gives a social element that I certainly have been missing over the last year as we have to spend far too much time not mixing.
