All work and some play...

This last week has been a return to normality, with the summer break well and truly over.  Life in the office is back-up to full speed, the kids are back at school and after school clubs, Birthday parties and everything else leaves us doing the standard parent juggling act to get everyone to the right place at the right time... and somewhere inbetween all that I am trying to keep relatively fit and healthy.

This week also included an overnight trip to London.  These aren't that infrequent, and in all honesty often include an excuse to fit a little bit of additional training in that I might not do at home.  Having found the wonderful Oasis swimming pools in Camden I try to do a longish swim in an evening.  (Long by my standards) as I went be in a rush to get anywhere.  I also get up early in the morning for a run and spot of sightseeing.  I've grown to realise that if I run in the morning it's always much harder - so generally aim for a tempo run rather than specific efforts work.

The other thing that I do is to make sure I fully fuel in the morning - as often there will be a lot of sweets and coffee floating around, which whilst tempting and tasty don't necessarily support training that well when they comprise 90% of your diet for a few days.  So a great slap-up breakfast is always on the cards!

Having started planning the week around  work, it's then generally a case of looking to see what else I might be able to accomplish in the week.  Not only is this the usual balance of trying to cover all three disciplines - but also then catching up on all the stuff at home.  This week this has so far resulted in 2 rest days this week, and as I write this I'm desperately hoping to squeeze in a Bric later, between tea and some TV time with my wife.

And this is the reality - if I was willing to put myself first and just get-up and train on the weekend  mornings, or head out at some point during the day, I could.  But I have a family, and often doing other things with them, no matter how small, is more important to them than another hour of exercise for me.  So when I've had other priorities during the week, its only fair that they take all the first choices.  After all, next week I'll be up early again
